CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION
The history and philosophy of administration of justice in America; recapitulation of the system; identifying the various sub-systems; role expectations, and their inter-relationships; theories of crime, punishment, and rehabilitation; ethics education and training for professionalism in the system.
     
COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion oof this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Identify the various agencies encompassing the administration of justice system and the inter-relationships between them.
  2. Recognize the administration of justice agency best suited to his or her talents and aspirations.
  3. Demonstrate his or her knowledge of the evolution of the administration of justice system, its objectives, role expectations and trends.
  4. Identify crime problems, causal theories, criminal types and the implications of crime statistics.
  5. Give an overview of the organization and operation of administration of justice agencies.

STANDARDS OF STUDENT CONDUCT

Appropriate conduct is required during traditional and distance education classes. Inappropriate conduct or communications with fellow class members, Testing Center or Distance Education staff is unacceptable. Aggressive language, insults, threats, displaying sexually oriented material, or bias based on gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or ethnic background will not be tolerated.

Students may be excluded from class activities for up to two sessions for disrupting the class or aggressive behavior. A meeting with the Dean of Students may be required to re-enter class.

Academic dishonesty, such as cheating or plagiarism is subject to disciplinary action. Refer to the Citrus College Catalog for additional information regarding standards of conduct and due process.

     
DISTANCE EDUCATION CLASS ACTIVITIES
  1. Material will be posted each Friday for the following week's activity in the Distance Education format.

    Assignments are due on Friday of each week by 4:30 pm, but will be accepted without penalty through Sunday at 11:55 pm. The links are timed out and are not available after Sunday at 11:55 pm. If you wait unitl after the due date / time to complete the weekly assignment or Extra Credit quiz, you do so at your own risk regarding availability of the materials.

  2. Review Announcements on Blackboard at least one time each week.
  3. Read the assigned material for class.
  4. Complete the on line Chapter Theme Sheet and send responses to the instructor. A reply will be sent with feedback regarding your responses. Please use an email address that allows reply to your material.
  5. Complete the chapter True - False quiz online for extra credit, if desired.
  6. Complete Unit Exams, and Unit News Article Reviews at the Testing center during the assigned time.
  7. Submit Career Search material at the Testing Center when Unit Exams are completed.
  8. Complete the Final Exam at the Testing Center during the assigned times.

GRADES
Grades are determined by a cumulative point method. Points are awarded in the following areas:
  PARTICIPATION 270 points
  UNIT EXAMS 600 points
  UNIT NEWS ARTICLES 180 points
  CAREER SEARCH 350 points
  TOTAL POSSIBLE 1,400 points
     
The semester grade corresponds to the total points earned as compared to the possible score of 1,400. Letter grades are based on a standard distribution:
     
  A 1260 - 1400 points
  B 1120 - 1259 points
  C 980 - 1119 points
  D 840 - 979 points
  F Under 840 points
     
INCOMPLETE GRADE
Incomplete academic work for unforeseeable, emergency and justifiable reasons at the end of the term may result in an "Incomplete" grade. An "Incomplete" may not be awarded for lack of academic performance or attendance throughtout the semester.
     
PROGRESS REPORTS

Reports of academic progress and attendance that are required for EOPS&S, CARE, athletics, scholarships, grants, or other uses will be completed upon request and posted in Blackboard. The password pretected site will restrict access to this informaiton in compliance with federal regulations. The student can deliver or forward the informaiton whomever they wish to have access the report.

Academic progress cannot be discussed in telephone or email conversations.

     
ATTENDANCE

Particpation in class activity is necessary for maximum credit. You may be dropped from class for four consecutive weeks of nonparticpation. No credit is awarded for checking-in by email without completing the week's activities. Submission of a complete chapter Theme Sheet for the chapter being reviewed earns 18 points. Contact the instructor if you have circumstances affecting your ability to particpate in class activities or complete assignments.

It is your responsibility to drop official from class in the Admissions and Records Office or you will receive a grade of A, B, C, D or F. The deadline to drop without penalty is October 26, 2009.

     
UNIT EXAMS
A Unit Exam will be administered at the Testing Center following the review of each three-chapter unit of study. Each exam will consist of "fill in the blank" style questions taken from the Theme Sheets of the unit. No reference material may be used during the exam. Students who must leave the Testing Center during the exam will not be permitted to resume the exam when they return.

Exams may not be taken early and make up is not permitted for missed exams.
     
UNIT NEWS ARTICLES
Each student is required to bring a news article to the Testing Center that relates to the unit of study covered at the time of the Unit Exam. The article may not be older than 30 days and should originate from a local newspaper such as the Los Angeles Times, Daily Tribune, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin or the electronic versions of these publications. A form will be provided calling for a one to two paragraph summary of the article and identification of the topic, chapter and page number of the text material related to the article. Articles may not be "dropped off" for credit. You may use a 3 x 5 card with informaion regarding the source of the article and the area of relationship with text material during the essay. You may not use your textbook. The article, or copy, should be attached to the essay form. International articles will not receive credit. The article and written material earns 45 points.
     
CAREER SEARCH

The Career Search is designed to provide an opportunity to expand the general information presented in the textbook to specific information regarding a career in the administration of justice field. Students are encourage to incorporate personal contacts and material gathered from the Internet in their research. The components have the following values:

Material must be submitted during the assigned exam session in “hard copy” (printed) format.
     
FINAL EXAM
The "Final Exam" will consist of the Unit 4 Exam and News Article Review. The Exam will be administered in the Testing Center starting Friday, December 11, 2009, and ending Thursday, December 17, 2009. The exam will be a “fill in the blanks” style test covering material from Chapters 10, 11, and 12. No reference material may be used during the exam. There is no make up for missed exams.
     
EXTRA CREDIT

Extra Credit may be earned by completing a True / False Quiz for each chapter that is posted on-line in the Blackboard Academic Suite. Credit may be earned only during the week we cover the chapter in class.

Credit will be awarded for completed work received by the instructor. Student computer incompatibility with the site may result in an inability to earn extra credit.

Click the Extra Credit button in the menu on the left side of the page and complete the quiz. The quiz will automatically be graded and the score will be posted to the Grade Center area of the site (available in “My Grades” section).

Quizzes are due on Friday of each week by 4:30 pm, but will be accepted through Sunday at 11:55 pm. The link is "timed out" and will not be available after Sunday at 11:55 pm. A maximum of ten points may be earned for each chapter for a total possible score of 120 points of Extra Credit.

     
RETURN AND RETENTION OF MATERIAL
Unit Exams, Career Research reports, and Unit News Articles will be retatined at my campus office through the end of the semester. Material may be claimed during Office Hours starting one week after completion, or will be returned to the student through the U.S. Postal Service if a self addressed, stamped envelope is submitted with the material at the Testing Center. Keep in mind that additional postage will be necessary. Unclaimed material will be destroyed at the completion of the semester, work submitted by students who withdraw from the course will be destroyed upon receipt of the drop status.
     
GRADE REPORTS

Grades are available on-line during the semester in the Citrus College Blackboard Academic Suite Grade Book. Go to the website at: citruscollege.blackboard.com and follow the login instructions. Grades are available in the Tools section under “My Grades”.

Semester grades are available through BlackBoard (unofficial) and WingSpan (official record).

Student attendance, exams scores, or points earned will not be posted in public areas.

Class attendance, student performance during the semester, or grades will not be discussed with friends or relatives (including parents and spouses) unless the student appears in person and provides consent for grades to be discussed with another person in the presence of the student

Graded student material cannot be released to friends or relatives (includes spouses and parents)

Grades cannot be discussed with students in telephone or email conversations
